For the purposes of this assignment, I selected the topic of dietary supplements, mainly the vitamins. The reason why I decided to focus on this topic is I have long known that many people are deficient in various minerals and vitamins, even if they eat healthily and properly. This is due to modern lifestyle, including sedentary lifestyle, insufficient amount of time spent in the sun and fresh air, and prolonged time spent in front of the computer (Kamangar & Emadi, 2012). Vitamins are considered essential nutrients as they perform numerous roles in the body, such as bolstering our immune system, increasing bone density, healing wounds, and many others. Vitamins also convert the food we consume into energy and even repair cellular damage (Zhang et al., 2020). In other words, I think that vitamins and their role in our life is a very interesting topic, the investigation of which can prove to be beneficial.
Specifically, I learned that there are benefits of regularly taking vitamins such as promotion of healthy aging, covering our nutritional bases, reducing anxiety and stress, and others. Simply said, vitamins are essential for our bodies to work properly. I think explaining this information to our society should benefit its members the most, with the practice illustrating that many of us have insufficient knowledge of what it means to take proper care of our health and wellness (Zhang et al., 2020). As regards the negative aspects of this topic, I think it involves the fact that there are debates regarding certain unsupported properties of vitamins to promote health such as preventing cardiovascular disease and cancer (Zhang et al., 2020).
Nonetheless, I still believe that researching this topic is important, because vitamins do provide the benefits they claim to provide. I think this is the most important aspect that I would like everyone to know about this topic, as I believe we should take our vitamins regularly and combine them with a healthy balanced diet if we want to achieve our health and wellness goals.
